Sterkspruit Crossing Public Bathroom Design

Our client for this design was Fortress Retail and Franzsen Architects. We were given a color pallet and budget, with only one request from the client, to use light colored vanities and drop-in basins. These bathrooms are a new edition to an existing shopping center and formed part of an upgrade project for the whole center.

The color pallet consisted of blues, greens, terracottas and beige greys. The current tile skirtings in the mall is a charcoal color and we decided to continue this into the bathrooms and extending it underneath the vanities. For the floor tile we used a neutral grey tile with movement in it and for the wall tile we chose a light tile with a speckle in it for interest. At the end of the entrance passage, we changed the wall tile to a mint colored tile to give contrast and we used the same tile at the TLC desk and at the baby changing station. Strip lighting were used to lead the eye into the different areas.

We decided to distinguish between the three different user areas with color, choosing a blue feature tile for the gents, a sage colored feature tile for the ladies and a terracotta tile for the accessible toilet. The feature tile used in the gents and ladies have different glazing options, which makes for a striking feature. We matched the door colors in each area to the feature tile.

We were also asked to design the signage for the bathrooms, as well as the directional signage for the whole mall. We kept to a striking modern design in black and white.
