THE PROJECT: CTM NORTHRIDING
The brief was to design a building for low energy use. To achieve this, the following design aspects were implemented:
The building could not be orientated true north because of the size of the building and site restrictions. This created a design challenge to restrict the direct sunlight ingress. All outside walls are cavity clay face brick with insulation material. Windows in the external walls are kept to a bare minimum.
Roof skylights with north and south orientation are introduced to provide natural light into the showroom and warehouse areas. Northern skylights with large roof overhangs keep out the summer sun from 23 September until 21 March, allowing the sun to enter the building in a controlled manner during winter.
The southern skylights provide good natural light. The skylights are equipped with adjustable louvres to aid natural cross ventilation. The insulation in the cavity walls and roof structure ensures a pleasant indoor environment and low energy use of the heating and cooling systems.
